Excellent Tyres... a step up from the GP4000s
I've tried many different tyre brands over the years and eventually settled on Conti clinchers - GP4000s for Spring and Summer riding, whilst using the Conti 4 Seasons for Autumn/Winter riding and commuting. I decided to convert to tubeless due the number of punctures I'd experienced in Autumn last year and gave these a go. They were easy enough to fit and inflate first time. Suffice to say, I've ridden through the backend of the Autumn and through this winter on them, along the same routes as before, without a single puncture! They've retained their original air pressure and it results in a most comfortable and responsive ride every time I set off! I'm blown away by the performance of these tyres - 10/10 for me!
Maybe biased, but still the best performing value for money tyre. Yes they are hard to put on the wheel, but well worth it.
very very hard to get onto wheels, but once on, only need a normal hand/track pump to get bead to seal, would buy again, only done 1 ride, so far so good,
Nice but tight!
Second set of these. The first set went on American Classic 420 tubeless wheels. Tried every trick in the book to mount these, ended up using tire levers and a friend (never used levers before on any tire). Aired up perfectly with some Stans sealant and a compressor. There is no hope of a roadside repair (using a tube) with these tires. I rode them 5000km with no flats until bald. Had to cut them off with a knife. Just got a second set for my new carbon 50mm wheels. The good news is I no longer need to carry a tube (useless anyways). I have not mounted them yet. They are currently mounted on some alloy wheels with tubes, very difficult to get on those (apparently this stretches them out). Conti, make these a little bigger!
Continental GP5000 Tubeless 700cx25
First time I've tried Continental tubeless tyres but reviews generally seemed good so thought I'd give them a go. Fitted to a new set of DT Swiss PR1600 Spline 23 wheels. Bit of a struggle getting them on the rims but no more hassle than usual. Previously run with Hutchinson Storm Fusion and getting thme seated was a right pain but these Conti's seated easily with just a track pump and once sealant added have held pressure pretty well. Weather has been so bad last few weeks that they've not been ridden yet so will reserve judgement on grip and feel. Great price for pair from Probikekit and fast delivery.
PRIX 5000 tubeless
So far tires are holding up well for riding on winter roads with lots of Debris. Good grip & Set up tubeless w/ no problem. Just bought 2nd set for other bike!
Continental Grand Prix 5000 tubeless road tire
First, I'm from Southern California so roads are pretty good and wet roads are unusual. I've run Continental tires for years and switched last year to the tubeless system. In that time I've had only one puncture that I've noticed because it sprayed sealant for a few seconds till I got the bike stopped, put the hole at the bottom, covered it with my finger for a few seconds while the sealant plugged the hole and got back on the bike and road the last seven miles down Glendora Mountain road back to my car. I also carry plugs in case that doesn't work but I've only used them on other peoples tires. Typically, when I take the tires off, I find 5 or 6 spots where the sealant has clumped up over a puncture from radial tire wire or something, but those holes get plugged so quickly I don't know they happened until I see them on the inside of the tire. These tires last a couple of thousand miles on the back and roughly twice that on the front for me but I'm pretty easy on tires for some reason. Old and cautious around corners would be my guess... But I still weigh 180 lbs. I run the rear tire at 72 lbs pressure and the front at 63.
I’ve tried many tyres from many brands over the years, it’s fair to say I’m a bit obsessed with them, in fact. I haven’t dabbled in the cheaper end of the market for years though, because I believe to a regular cyclist and enthusiast you get what you pay for and anything less is a false economy. I enjoy cornering hard, in all conditions and I take a lot of comfort knowing I’m riding on something that’s been highly engineered. On to the GP5000 TL. I first tried the non tubeless GP5000 25mm on a 28mm wide rim and found them to be a game changer on all levels when going from Continentals excellent 4Seasons tyres. I swore by the 4Seasons tyres for years. The GP5’s though, wow, faster, more comfortable, more compliant, more grip, zero punctures on two sets in over 6000 miles in all conditions. So impressed I wanted to try the TL versions next in 25mm when I needed new tyres. I’m now up to 2000 miles on the TL’s and still zero punctures, but there is just a tiny bit of trade off in comfort. They are not slower that I can notice but the TL are not as sublime/plush as the tubed version. It’s not enough to put me off though, still super comfy and I’ve ordered another set of TL’s because my other rims are tubeless capable and I just want that peace of mind that most punctures will be dealt with instantly. I use OKO magic milk high fibre race sealant. Naturally there is also some trade off in longevity, after 3000 miles on each set I’ve got they are getting close to end of life and I only expect to get another 500-1000 miles before they’re done, so a total of about 4000 miles per set. I’m happy with this though given the all round high performance they offer. Bravo, continental, these tyres are just fantastic and since they perform so well in winter I’ve used them to replace all my 4 seasons tyres too.
GP 5000 TL
Most everything you have read about these tires is true. They are a huge hassle to mount. I put them on Ksyrium elite rims and as far as I can tell, that simply cannot be done without using a lot of force with tire levers and considerable profanity. It is not as bad if you have previously mounted them with tubes on a spare rim, gassed them up and let them sit for a few weeks. But even so, they are just awful to mount. The upside is that they do not flat. Where I ride, there are goatheads everywhere. In the late summer and early fall, you cannot go for a ride without getting at least one or two flats on conventional tires. But I have been riding the GP 5000 TL tires 200 - 250 miles per week for the last 10 months, and have yet to get a flat. For that, I am willing to put up with the hassle of mounting them.
