It's an inner gear cable, does the job

So long as you make sure you're buying the right cable for your housing, this one will do just fine. Very long for any setup on a typical bike and even some positions on a tandem (maybe not rear derailleur if shifters are at front). Newer Shimano may have slightly larger gear cables, so like I said, make sure this is the right width cable for the application and you're good to go.
