The R1 is the height of road cycling performance, comfort and style in the DMT shoe range. The full carbon sole provides impressive stiffness, whilst the 2 x Boa® closure and anatomic foam padded upper provides ultimate comfort. A light, breathable anatomic sock liner with holes allows for areation of the feet, and the reinforced heel ensures your feet stay in place when putting down the power. The upper is designed to be perfect for narrow feet so take this into consideration when looking for your size.
New Anatomic Quarry Areated Carbon Sole The new carbon sole quarry areated is made in 100% carbon fibre UD FAW150, innovative material, extremely rigid and resistant to impacts; much stronger than steel, but with high thermo-stability properties. This way, the sole becomes a single element that breaths thanks to the front hole and innovative inner sole with micro-holes of 5 mm diameter.

I bought these as my first "proper" cycling shoes - i.e. full carbon sole, dual boa closures. Personally I love the styling, with high vis on the outward facing half of the shoe and matte black on the inward side. No problems being noticed in these. As expected for a full carbon sole, it is utterly stiff and allows for very efficient power transfer. Coming from nylon soled shoes I really did notice the difference. I felt that I was able to keep the power down even when my legs were starting to fatigue, similarly whilst doing power hill climbs out of the saddle. The heel is nicely cupped with grippers to keep your foot in place, as do the twin boa dials. I find them much easier to adjust on the fly than ratchet style closures. Comfort is probably the only issue I have with the R1s. On longer rides I found my feet getting numb, so it's just as well that the boas allow easy adjustment. I also experienced painful digging around the tongue area of the shoe a couple of times, although I remedied this by ensuring my heel was cinched deep into the cup of the shoe before tightening the dials, and then tightening the upper dial first. Overall I'm very happy with the R1s, especially at the sale price I got them for.
