Zipp’s 303 Firecrest wheelset has long been the premium all-rounder of choice for those looking to mix things up on road or off it. Before gravel riding entered common parlance, they were the go-to wheelset for the competitive cyclocross rider.
But don’t be deterred if you’re a pure roadie. These wheels draw on the experience of a company that’s been honing its wheel-building prowess in the Spring Classics for season after season. They’re a wheel equally as comfortable keeping up on a speedy weekend club run as they are on the jarring roads of the cobbled roads of Roubaix. With this latest edition, you can be assured that every effort has gone into ensuring top-class comfort, low weight, and speed both on the flats and uphill.
The Hooks Are Off
More and more wheel builders are opting for ‘hookless’ rims. This design feature removes the distinctive ‘hook’ curl on the inside of traditional wheels. Instead, you’ll notice the rim wall extends straight up from the rim bed. In Zipp’s latest offering, the straightedge allows for a smoother transition between rim and tire, improving the aerodynamics of the wheel.
In addition, the internal width of the rim is a wide 25mm, the company’s in-house testing pairs this best with a 28mm tubeless tire. Add in that these wheels are built for disc brakes, and it’s clear they’ve been optimized for use in varied real-world conditions.
Less Weight, More Aero Weighing in at 1,352g, this is a light wheelset by any definition. Given the low weight, you can be confident they won’t see you being dropped on alpine ascents and will get up to speed quickly for those decisive moments. Combined with a 40mm rim depth, you won’t find many — if any — bicycle wheels offering such depth and stiffness at a comparable weight and price point.
Real-World Test Many claims by wheel makers are made based on unobtainable optimum riding conditions. For these wheels, Zipp has completed testing in real-world conditions, as opposed to the more typical sterile wind tunnel testing or computer simulation.
The results of its testing are evident in the design of the wheel. The shape is slightly more bulbous than the previous iteration, which — like straightening the inner rim — helps smooth the transition between rim and tire, reducing drag and ultimately adding more speed for less effort.
A wide rim also aids in reducing tire deflection, which decreases rolling resistance and enables you to use a wider tire, increase tire volume, and lower tire pressure. All combined, this equals a smoother ride and less rider fatigue, which — when you consider the old adage ‘smoot is fast’ — can only be considered a good thing, especially in their natural environment, rough terrain.
In The Hub It’s not only the rim design that has been overhauled. The 303 Firecrests feature an all-new hubset. Designed and developed by leading German engineers, the new hub uses stainless-steel cartridge bearings and includes an improved seal, further indicating Zipp’s intention for this to be a wheel that is versatile and durable. Additionally, with 66 points of engagement, it offers near-instant engagement from freewheeling to putting the power down for that decisive moment.

Zipp 303 firecrest wheels
This has been my first set of carbon road wheels. Just got back from 2 weeks of riding on the big island of Hawaii doing regular 1000m plus climbs and the wheels felt great. Super light. They catch slightly more wind in a crosswind than my aluminum stock wheels but that is to be expected. Very nice rear hubs with lots of engagement points. Very damped. The first time I’ve come back from a ride without hand numbness! I watched the airline treat my bike bag like the opening scene from Ace Ventura and still no damage. Set up tubeless with a hand pump very easily. The shipping from the UK to Canada took only 3 days!!! And no duty. Very happy with my purchase and the service from Probikekit.
Half a wheelset
I’d like to be able to provide a full review of this excellent looking wheelset. Sadly ProBikeKit only sent me a front wheel and wouldn’t send a rear wheel to complete the purchase. So now returning the front wheel to get a refund. It looked great though! 5 starts for Zipp; zero for ProBikeKit.
Light, snappy and confidence inspiring wheels
I am using the 303 firecrest wheels for a month now and am super happy with them. The really upgraded my ride and made the bike feel lighter, faster and snappier. I am using them with 30mm Conti 5000 tires, which feels soft and super grippy. I did not had the chance to try the wheels in fast down hills or in cross winds. So far - I can warmly recommend.
ZIPP 303 Firecrest wheelset
Awesome services. The product availability and price are extremely good. Shipment was prompt and delivered fast for delivery to Utah, USA. A pleasure to do business with.
first carbon rims
Replaced the DT Swiss R470 rim on my Aethos Comp. Had to purchase the Zipp Speed Weaponry ZR1 XDR Freehub, but got a good deal on the rims. These rims changed my bike for the better, whole lot better. So much smoother and feel like I am using less effort for same speed averages. Definitely was worth it.
Good Price and Fast Shipping
On time and on budget in great condition. Thanks probikekit
Zipp 303 firecrest hookless
Shipping was was fast and items arrived without any obvious damage to the box. 1 week from UK to Melb . Wheels set up and matched with Zipp G40 Tubeless Tyres. In the same conditions as riding on my previous wheels my average speed was up noticably and I was finishing my ride fresher and felt like doing more. They climb fast, hold speed and sprint pretty well too. So I would say they are a great all round wheel. Also note Dimple tech onboard so they cut through the air nicely with a 1to1 surface relationship with tyres . The the new hookless tech enables them to run lower pressure so you get more comfort and efficiency over surface imperfections. Trust in the Zipp Tyres pressure calculator and you'll get the benefits. The new graphics help them blend in too. I'm not a fan of the old large lettering as it's a bit dated now. So the styling is on point for current times. I'd recommend these to road or gravel bike riders and can be quite easily be used as a sole set of wheels
