Product Overview

An icon updated for 2011. This pedal replaces the almost iconic Dura-Ace 7810 pedal which was so famously ridden through the Tour by Lance Armstrong. With a brand new carbon fibre composite body and 3-bearing axle it weighs less and performs just as you'd expect for Shimano's Pro level pedal.

Key Features:

  • Carbon pedal body provides a large contact area for stable and efficient power transfer.
  • A wide flat profile gives better road clearance and cornering angles.
  • 3 bearings along the axle give a reliable system with a smooth feel.
  • Adjustable release tension with rear marker.
  • Replaceable wear plate is stainless steel like old, for a long service life.
  • Supplied with a pair of SPD-SL cleats (SH11) and fitting kit.
  • Weight: 251g (PBK Office scales).

There are cheaper and lighter pedals but none work as flawlessly as these - Review by Cycling Plus June 2011

"... there's a good reason why amateur riders choose Dura Ace pedals: reliability. When you don't have a sponsor paying you to use something else, or a mechanic to keep a fickle system running smoothly, the absolute reliability and peace of mind these pedals afford is worth the extra 70g.

"...the appeal of the performance and reliability is the same as ever, only now there is less of a weight penalty."

Same great SPD-SL shape and solid feel with a new, lighter carbon body - Review by Velonews - November 2010

I’ve used Shimano SPD-SL’s on-and-off for a few years now, and have always been a fan of the simple, robust design, positive engagement and “firm” hold they provide, particularly with the red float-less cleats.
There isn’t a whole lot to be said about the ride quality of a good pedal, they simply perform as you want them to. A lack of apparent flaws is the most noteworthy attribute. That said, the 7900’s hold onto your foot securely, with no up-and-down motion, and feel stiff under load. They’re lighter than previous iterations, while maintaining the same super-solid feel that the latest batch of SPD-SL’s has been known for.

"All the good bits of the old Dura-Ace pedal but lighter" - 4.5/5 - Review by Bikeradar - December 2010

There's not a single flaw we can find with Shimano's latest Dura-Ace pedals in terms of sheer performance, mechanical function, and long-term durability but even so, the added premium as compared to some of the competition strikes as a tad dear even to our eyes.

Working great for me... - Review by Kenny

The weight savings from the previous model are great especially when building a light bike. They don't creek and the pedals do have quite a higher clearance from the floor so I like them a lot and I don't regret dropping the $$$ for them. If you have the $$ get them. Especially if your building up or currently riding a high-end carbon machine.

Smart outlook than previous model, light weight - Review by Henry

If you using carbon frameset, it's better match with black colour pedal rather than the previous 7800 version.

Solid contact point - Review by Whitney

These have been a great contact point for me. They provide a broad platform, positive & consistent engagement/disengagement & no slop when clipped in. They're not the most exotic option, they're certainly not the lightest, but they are consistent performers.

A couple of things that I really appreciate. One, when the pedal is hanging free it rotates to the same orientation (front tip pointing up) every time, making clipping into it almost reflexive without the need to look down or spin it around. Two, the SPD cleats have small patches of soft rubber that provide a little bit of much needed traction when walking on wet pavement or across the polished concrete floor of a cafe.

Stack height is about average for a high-end pedal. The same is true of cornering clearance.
