Introduction to Giro d'Italia

The Giro d'Italia is one of the three most important European grand tours, alongside the Vuelta a Espana and of course the Tour De France.

Starting in Naples on the 4th May, the 96th edition of the Giro d'Italia runs for 2116 miles across the Italian terrain and several mountainous regions. With a mixture of  3 time trials, 11 days of mountain races, flat road cycling and of course the all important course rest days. The Giro d'Italia is a truly grueling endurance race that will test even the most experienced cyclists in the competition. The three top contenders of the Grand Tour are the Italian Vincenzo Nibali, the Canadian Ryder Hesjedal and of course our very own Bradley Wiggins, with many coming up closely behind.

The teams on top form are Team Sky who have a strong line up including Bradley Wiggins, Chris Knees and Danny Pate, the powerful Garmin-Sharp with last year's winner Ryder Hesjadal, David Millar and Andrew Talansky, Omega Pharma-Quick Stop with Mark Cavendish another British powerhouse, and Asana with last year's no.2 Vincenzo Nibali.

The Giro d'Italia looks set to be a competitive feast of grueling challenges, pushing the experienced cyclists and newcomers to the brink. The course is set to push fitness and endurance to the extreme, whilst creating an entertaining event for us mere spectators.

Many cyclists dream of winning this famous hat trick, one in particular is Sir Bradley Wiggins. Having won the Tour de France and also scoring gold in the London Olympics, Bradley Wiggins definitely has his sights on the pink jersey and adding another glorious trophy to his collection.

The Route:

For the first time in 10 years the Giro d'Italia will start with a road stage, meaning the sprinters have the advantage for obtaining the pink jersey. Stage 1 takes place in Naples this year, a city that has only seen the Giro d'Italia on a few occasions.
