Stage 16 and 17 of the Giro d'Italia have seen some extreme weather with the routes taking place in the northern parts of Italy and the mountainous region of France. Stage 16 started in Valloire and finished 238km later in Ivrea. Anothe mountain stage, the riders are put through their paces, pushing their injuries and energy reserves to the max.
With the weather being so changeable and hard going on the cyclist, the winners are really a roller-coaster ride of challenges.
After a gruelling race Benat Intxausti gave the Movistar team its third stage win, with a winning time of 5,52,48. 'I want to dedicate this victory to Xavier Tondo and my gran, this is the first time I've been able to put my arms in the air with a win, so when I crossed the line it was for them. We've got a bit of a free role here in the race, but my aim is to finish in the top 10,' said the 27 year old.
Stage 17 was a hattrick win for Team Movistar with Italian Visconti taking the pink jersey for this flat stage. He won the race from Caravaggio to Vicenza in 5:15:34 'It's incredible. I found myself again. The Galibier gave me back my energy and belief. I feel very well indeed,' Visconti said referring to his previous stage 15 victory.
