A Reasonable Choice

The bad: the head tube is absurdly tall, as is the modern fashion. I made it work by going a size down and using a track stem. The clearance is not very generous; aluminum frames necessarily have fairly large-diameter tubes, but even so, in my view they erred too far in the direction of crank and heel clearance at the chainstays. There would easily have been clearance for a 185mm crank on my 54cm frame, which is obviously overkill. But even 2mm more tire clearance would have been extremely helpful; I could not fit standard fender hardware without forcing. Likewise, a little extra length to the seatstays would have given a significantly better safety margin for fender clearance. The brake blocks on my Shimano medium reach calipers are just about exactly centered; it wouldn't have hurt to have to move them a couple mm down. The same applies to the matching Kinesis fork. A standard road bike from the mid-80s has more clearance than this specialized winter bike, and if you can pick up such a frame at a garage sale it would be even cheaper. The good: the finish was flawless and very attractive. The welds are not smoothed, but are not ugly either. The handling of my 54cm frame is pleasingly neutral, and I enjoy riding it. All up, my finished build with fenders weighs about 21 pounds - pretty good for an inexpensive commuter. With 28mm tires it easily soaks up the broken asphalt on my commute and makes for very comfortable ride. Overall: it delivers on its promise, but there is room for improvement.
