Great pedals they are sturdy and do their job well, as expected of shimano.
These are great pedals. I have them on my two long distance bikes and put about 10k miles on my other set and decided I need this new set for a second bike I recently got. They clip in and out easily and give enough side movement to allow you to be comfortable. I have never had to adjust or do any work on these either so they are well made, too
Have used these for years on my tri bike. The sealed bearings hols up fine to the wet-even salt water. I've put several thousand miles on these with no issues. They function just like my 105 & Ultegra pedals, but weigh just a bit more and do not wear quite as well. Sure there are no replacement parts available, but so what? At a cost just over what Shimano now charges for the cleats alone, these pedals are are about the best value in bicycling today!
Shimano's literature reveals that save for the plastic skid plate, these pedals are virtually identical to the much more expensive 105 and Ultegra models. They also weigh virtually the same. The sole significant mechanical difference is that the skid plate on the R540s is plastic, while the 105 and Ultegra models use a metal skid plate. That difference has been irrelevant for me, because the bearings in the SPD-SL pedals have worn out long before the skid plate needs replacement (and they are not replaceable). The R540s cost little more than a set of replacement cleats. For that amount of money, you literally cannot go wrong. Save yourself some money and get these instead.
Great pedals for beginners, but the plastic bits wear out and it's a mission to find. I went to a few bike shops to find the plastic bits and none stock them. They had to contact the rep to get them. It seems like I'm the only person to visit these shops to ask for these bits. By the way, if you don't replace the plastic bits when they wear out, you'll start wearing the aluminium on the pedal. Not good. I eventually change my pedals to PD-6700 with stainless steel bits. I don't have to worry when they are going to wear out now.
